Floating and Hair Color
As a girl who floats regularly and highlights her hair, I definitely understand concerns about floating with colored hair. Getting the gorgeous hair color you want is no easy (or cheap) feat, so here’s a quick 101 on when it’s safe to hop in the tank.
If your stylist uses semi or demi permanent color, or they dye your hair bright beautiful shades of red, purple, blue, green or pink….unfortunately you CAN NOT float until several weeks after having your hair colored. Our guideline is that you must wait until the water runs clear and dye does not come off in the shower or when you towel dry it. With semi and demi permanent hair colors, the color molecules sit on the surface of the hair which means the top layers of color wash off when you wet your hair. This can be extremely costly for us as the hair dye can discolor our float water and even permanently stain the float tanks. If your hair is not running clear in the shower, please reschedule your appointment.
***If you’re not sure, the best way to see if you’re float-ready, is to take a damp washcloth and rub the end of your hair with some friction. If there’s color on the cloth, it’s a no-go!
If your stylist uses permanent hair color (this could be highlights, blond, brunette, covering grey, etc), there is generally no problem with floating. This type of color opens the hair shaft and applies new color within the cuticle, which permanently changes the color composition of the hair. The color grows out from the root and doesn’t usually wash out in the shower. After having your hair colored, I would suggest waiting a few days so that the salt water doesn’t strip or fade the expansive work that you’ve had done. After that, you are good to go!
If you use keratin treatments, it is recommended that you avoid salt water which our pods are filled with. Keratin is pricy, so I’d suggesting skipping the float until your treatment grows out.
